what to expect after tennis elbow surgery

Contrary to what the name suggests, tennis elbow doesn’t just affect tennis players. It is a common injury that can happen to anyone who overuses his or her elbow. Signs of tennis elbow include weakness and/or pain in the elbow that may radiate to the forearm and wrist. Tennis elbow can also cause trouble using one’s hand for daily activities, such as turning a doorknob. While first-line treatment methods such as rest, medication and exercise are often successful in remedying these symptoms, tennis elbow surgery is needed in some cases. When considering this procedure, it’s helpful to know what to expect after tennis elbow surgery.

What to Expect After Tennis Elbow Surgery

While no two patients will have an identical recovery experience, here are some general guidelines for what to anticipate following the procedure:

  • – When the procedure is complete, your orthopedic surgeon will place a bandage on your arm to cover the wound and stitches. You may also need to wear a cast or a splint for approximately 7-10 days to help your arm heal. Keep in mind that you will not be able to use your arm during this period. Therefore, you will need someone to assist you at home.
  • – Once your doctor finds that your arm is ready for movement, you will begin doing strengthening exercises, first with assistance and then on your own. These exercises may be painful at first, but the pain should dissipate within 3-6 months as your elbow becomes re-accustomed to movement. Depending on your progress, you may be instructed to continue the exercise program for up to one year.
  • – Generally speaking, most patients are able to return to their daily activities within about 2-6 weeks after tennis elbow surgery. Athletes may be able to start playing sports again in 4-6 months. However, you should bear in mind that this is one of the areas in which what to expect after tennis elbow surgery will vary depending on the severity of your injury. It will also depend on the type of surgery you have and your body’s natural healing rate.

Now that you are equipped with this information on what to expect after tennis elbow surgery, you are prepared to make an educated decision on whether undergoing this procedure is the right choice for you.
